The Start of Something Great !Text Box: The Thurmont Middle School Leo Club is now up an operating! The Club was chartered the same night that the Thurmont Lions Club celebrated their 79th Charter Night Anniversary. The Club does an activity each month and is working to set up a web page which will eventually link to this page and take the place of this page.

Meanwhile efforts have begun to develop a Leos Club at Catoctin High School! The great news is we’re going to have another LEO Club! The good news is we’ve made remarkable progress towards forming and chartering it for young people of high school age. We hope that the Catoctin High School principal and faculty come through with support in the form of a faculty advisor so we can have the Club at the school. But, if we don’t get that support, we’re forming and chartering the Club anyhow! Creating this new Club facilitates greatly transition of our sixteen TMS eight-grade LEOs, and it offers other young people, including some of our children and grandchildren of high school age, a chance to serve the community alongside us. A huge pat-on-the-back for Lion Wendy Candela’s husband (and prospective Lion) Terry for the outstanding leg-work he has done and continues to do to get this new Club up and running. We hope to report success in the near future….George Bolling, LEO advisor.

Following is an article from the February 2009 Thurmont Lions Club Newsletter:

Thurmont Middle School LEO Club The LEO Club had some distinguished visitors during the March meeting. Fred Mullins and Gene Doynon , both prospective Lions, from JerMae described how their collections and donations  to the Thurmont Food Bank are distributed and helpful to the needy and to thank the LEOs for their extraordinary success in these collections. Then, Lion Shirley Long told the LEOs the extraordinary story of the nature and effects of Callie Watkins’ disease and the ongoing Callie’s Van campaign. The LEOs decided to donate $150 to that campaign and to create posters for Callie’s birthday. Then, the LEOs organized to support the Benefit Breakfast for Callie’s Van. Five LEOs worked at the Breakfast—Collin Wood, Pearl Umberger, Austin Frushour, Clint Lambert, and Stephen Cook, and they did a superb job! On his own initiative, LEO Collin made $50 selling candy bars for Callie, and he was able to present that check at the breakfast. Fred Mullins’ 8-year-old grandson Tucker from New Market delighted Callie by presenting her a stuffed elephant which sings “Happy Birthday.” The LEOs also started planning for spring activities, including helping clean up the Trolley Trail, nominating officers for next year, recruiting new members for next year, and transitioning the eighth grade LEOs into the new Catoctin  LEO Club. This month, on April Fools’ Day, under Lion “Easter Bunny” Diane McClean’s guidance the LEOs stuffed about 1000 eggs with candy for our Club’s Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. Lion Larry Mundy also presented the LEOs a new gavel and gong set, hoping that it will help the LEO President keep order!! I hope it works! Lion Shirley also came by to give the LEOs a report on the Callie’s Breakfast and to recognize their support of the event. On April 22nd, our LEOs will be treated to a Leader Dog program during a special meeting..….George Bolling, LEO advisor.
